The Department of Roads and Public Works is proud to welcome 30 young apprentices to the award-winning Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme, a transformative initiative aimed at tackling youth unemployment and developing critical technical skills across the Northern Cape Province.
Over the next 36 months, these aspiring artisans – including 18 women and 12 men – will receive specialised training and valuable workplace experience in scarce and high-demand trades, namely:
- Refrigeration
- Welding
- Fitting and Turning
- Boilermaking

The programme attracted an overwhelming response from young people across the province, demonstrating the strong demand for opportunities that lead to meaningful careers and economic participation.
Through classroom learning, practical workshop training and assessments, the apprentices will gain nationally recognised qualifications and hands-on experience, preparing them to become skilled artisans who can contribute to the growth and development of our province.
Welcoming the new intake, Head of Department Dr Steven Jonkers reaffirmed that these young apprentices are not only building careers for themselves, but they are also helping to build the future skills base of our province and country.
The future is being built today. We wish all our apprentices success as they embark on this exciting journey towards becoming the next generation of qualified artisans in the Northern Cape.
