The bridge rehabilitation by the Engineer Squadron members is intended to ensure mobility within the community. The bridge embankment was washed off causing difficulty for vehicles trying to crossover.
For a month since the floods, drivers could not crossover to the opposite side of the village. Taxi drivers had adopted a new style, whereby taxi’s from one side of the village drop passengers at the bridge, they then crossover over on foot and catch taxi’s on the opposite side of the village in order to travel to their various destinations.
The drivers and villagers waited patiently as soldiers were operating different Construction Machines rehabilitating the bridge while the Sappers on the other hand filled in the gabions with stones.
The Construction Troop Commander is Captain Siyabonga Siphesihle Khumalo, who continuously ensured that the Machine operators were briefed accordingly and do the tasking as expected.
The task is not completely done yet, but currently, the vehicles are able to cross over.
The members are under the Command of Major Madimetsa Lucas Masenya of the Engineer Squadron deployed for disaster relief under Joint Tactical Headquarters KwaZulu-Natal.
