Top 5 Causes / Classes of incidents
1. Struck by an object
This class of incident also includes falling objects and is closely related to the source of most hand and feet related accidents.
2. Slips, Trips and falls
The majority of these types of accidents are, fortunately, normally minor incidents, however, a few recent accidents have resulted in fractures, making this a key focus area in order to avoid “major” accidents. Basic housekeeping can reduce these accidents dramatically. Remember, a fall from a height or into the water can be fatal! Wear the correct protective equipment!
3. Machinery and Plant related incidents
This includes the use of hand tools as well as portable machinery. Further to this, it also relates to the safe operation of our major plant items, such as cranes and heavy drill rigs. Platform safety plays a vital role in reducing these types of accidents as well.
4. Caught between & Struck against an object
Getting caught between a rig and for example, a wall could be potentially fatal! Also, avoid placing your hands between pieces of rebar or piling tubes.
5. Objects in eyes
Some of the “tools” you cannot go without, include your eyes, hands and feet. Protect these at all costs. Wear the appropriate PPE!
Over and above the Top 5, other classes of accidents also still occur. These include electrocution, road traffic accidents, burns and health-related complications. In summary, how can you avoid the above? Obey the rules, follow the procedures, wear the PPE and don’t take short cuts!
