Transport Minister Hon. Sindisiwe Chikunga and Deputy Minister Lisa Mangcu conducted site visits to inspect the progress on the Msikaba and Mtentu mega-bridges.
Once completed, the route will be approximately 69km and 85km shorter than the current N2 and R61 routes respectively.
Due to its shorter and flatter alignment, this will result in the compression of travel time for motorists by an hour and a half to three hours for light and heavy freight vehicles.
This project will also bring about the building of new river bridges, several new interchange bridges and the upgrading or construction of numerous linking access roads that form part of the project providing connectivity, mobility and access to social and economic opportunities for local communities.
