Road construction and maintenance in the Eastern Cape, has received a major boost as Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha received 11 road construction/maintenance graders from the manufacturing firm, Komatsu earlier today in Komani.
The graders were procured by the department to attend to some of the roads in the province, mainly rural roads that have been damaged by the recent floods. The graders received form part of the 36-item yellow fleet the province had committed to procuring to help deal with the challenge of damaged roads across the province and will be sent to Districts across the province to start fixing roads, starting with the worst affected.
In receiving the graders, MEC Nqatha stressed the need for them to be licensed and get operators inducted as a matter of urgency so they can start servicing our communities.
“This is in line with the Premier’s (Oscar Mabuyane) commitment and my Policy Speech that we were going to procure a plant to strengthen our service delivery model to deal with the challenges of our roads in the province. This comes at a time when our province is facing many challenges, and it will be a great relief to the masses of our people who need these roads the most to help ease the access to social services,” said MEC Nqatha.
