The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit arrested two individuals for tampering with essential infrastructure and malicious damage to property after they were found drilling a borehole on Council property in Mayfair.
On Sunday, 12 January 2025, officers received a complaint regarding the unauthorized drilling activity at the corner of Church Street and 9th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the drilling was taking place on the sidewalk in front of a row of shops.
Despite the presence of a Wayleave from Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), drilling on Council property without proper authorization is strictly prohibited. The two male suspects were arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS.
The drilling equipment, including the drill machine, air compressor trailer, and White Isuzu Truck, were seized.
The JMPD emphasizes the importance of adhering to all necessary regulations and obtaining the required permits for any construction or excavation work on public property. Unauthorized activities can have serious consequences, such as damage to underground pipes and cables, and may result in legal action.
