The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the infrastructure arm of the City of Johannesburg, is proud to announce that the Moyane Drive and 16th Street Public Environment Upgrade Project in Orange Farm is nearing completion. This transformative initiative aligns with the vision for Greater Orange Farm to develop a sustainable, vibrant urban environment rooted in the principles of sustainable urbanism.
The project forms part of the broader Orange Farm Turnkey Programme, which includes the Chris Hani Sports Complex and Multipurpose Hall. By incorporating public environment upgrades, the initiative seeks to create a safer, more accessible, and economically vibrant Orange Farm for all its residents.
Key features of the upgrades along Moyane Drive and 16th Street include safe pedestrian crossings, paved sidewalks, street furniture such as bins and benches, lighting, trader stalls, and soft landscaping. These enhancements are designed to create a pedestrian-friendly and walkable environment, seamlessly connecting current and future developments within the township.
The public environment upgrades aim to:
- Introduce safe pedestrian crossings: Enhancing safety for residents and schoolchildren by creating clearly marked and protected pedestrian zones.
- Install paved sidewalks: Improving accessibility for pedestrians, including those with limited mobility, while contributing to a neater, more structured streetscape.
- Provide street furniture: Offering convenience and comfort through strategically placed benches, bins, and trader stalls to support local commerce and enhance public
- Add increased lighting: Enhancing visibility and safety during nighttime, fostering a sense of security in the community.
- Develop soft landscaping: Creating greener, more aesthetically pleasing public areas that promote relaxation and improve environmental quality.
In addition to these features, the project also seeks to unlock potential economic opportunities by enhancing the area’s appeal to external investors and stimulating job creation through infrastructure development.
The scope of works for the Moyane Drive and 16th Street upgrades includes:
- Stormwater pipe installation to improve drainage and reduce flooding
- Protection of services to ensure critical infrastructure remains intact during construction
- Milling of the existing road to prepare it for new surfacing
- Construction of concrete manholes to enhance stormwater management
- Bulk earthworks for road construction to lay a solid foundation for durable roads
- Resurfacing of existing roads to provide smooth and safe travel for motorists
- Installation of kerbs and paving for defined road edges and pedestrian pathways
- Speed humps and road markings to ensure safer traffic flow
- Road signage for improved navigation and safety
