The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works is making steady progress in restoring the Skaaprivier Bridge, which provides access to the town of Buffelsrivier. The original bridge was completely washed away during the devastating floods of 2023.
The new 60-meter-long bridge is being constructed with a sustainable, resilient design to withstand future flood events. The project also includes a 4.86 km section of road. The structure features 2.4-meter-high box culverts, ensuring greater stability and improved stormwater channelling during heavy rainfall.
The remaining work includes filling and compaction on both the Kommagas and Springbok sides of the bridge, installation of 3-meter mud gabions, guardrails, and tar surfacing.
Once construction is complete, the surrounding area will be rehabilitated to support a wetland environment, creating a natural habitat for birds and livestock.
We thank road users for their patience and cooperation. A stop-and-go traffic control system remains in place while work continues.
