The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, is spearheading a series of critical interventions to refurbish the Meadowlands Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Depot.
First opened in 2008, the Meadowlands Depot holds historical significance as the first Rea Vaya BRT depot in Johannesburg. Spanning eight hectares, it can house 270 buses and includes essential infrastructure such as an administration and maintenance building, underground fuel tanks, wash bays, and secure parking facilities.
The JDA’s refurbishment project is set to upgrade key infrastructure and facilities within the depot to enhance operational efficiency and support Johannesburg’s sustainable public transport goals.
The scope of work includes refurbishments to the existing gatehouse, fire station, body repairs buildings, workshops, workshop office, fuel facility, waste management area, management offices, recreational area, cleaners’ facilities, admin filing storeroom, dry bay, wash bay, administrator office, and external works such as site clearance, fencing, mechanical and electrical installations, fire water infrastructure, and site lighting.
The refurbishment will also encompass comprehensive construction and maintenance work, including:
- Foundations
- Concrete, formwork, and reinforcement
- Masonry
- Carpentry and joinery
- Ceilings
- Floor coverings
- Ironmongery
- Metal works
- Plastering
- Tiling
- Plumbing
- Glazing
- Paintworks
- Site clearance
- Fencing
JDA CEO Mr. Themba Mathibe emphasised the importance of this project in strengthening Johannesburg’s public transport infrastructure. “The refurbishment of the Meadowlands Depot is a key step in ensuring that the Rea Vaya BRT system remains a reliable and sustainable transport solution for the city.
