Impendle, KwaNovuka Openfield: Today, we convened a community outreach event that marked the beginning of the construction of road P130.
We announced that about 105 jobs have been created for the local community. Importantly, we wish to emphasise that our priority will be given to households living below the poverty line.
We appreciate the ongoing support from Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has ensured that SAPS is deployed to ensure that no criminal elements are allowed to hijack this project and many others.
The days of demanding 30% are over.
We have ensured that only deserving local companies, established by honest entrepreneurs, will be paid close to R17. 3 million for the construction and other services rendered.
The distribution of the contract is as follows:
- Owned by women – R3, 3 million
- Owned by Youth -R551 million
- Owned by people with Disability R1. 1 million
- Other companies – R2. 2 million
Total – R11 million
We have set the target of completing the construction of this 3 km road by August 2026.
This road will link Impendle and Howick and ensure access for local communities to socio-economic opportunities in the entire Umgungundlovu District.
The contractor is expected to do earthworks, layer works, and an 8.5-meter-wide surfaced carriageway with associated drainage systems.
Finally, we must hasten to point out that we terminated the previous contractor who failed to deliver.
He only managed to do some earthworks, a box culvert, and partial stormwater pipe installations. We will never tolerate poor workmanship and shoddy work. Quality work must be produced for the people who voted for this government.
Issued by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma.
