Mangwenya bridges 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all in the Dumezulu area, situated in Ward 8 of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality. Bridges 1, 2 and 3 are pedestrian type bailey bridges and bridge 4 will be a vehicular type bridge. The construction of these bridges commenced on 17 August 2020 and is undertaken through a partnership between DOT and SANDF.
Bridge 1, 2 and 3 cross minor streams which are tributaries of the Mangwenya River. Bridge 4 is on district road 1095 and crosses over the Boboyi perennial River. These bridges will provide a crucial link between the communities of Dumezulu and Ngodini. The communities of Dumezulu and Ngodini do not have any clinics. Thembalesizwe is the nearest clinic to these communities and the new bridges will improve access to it.
There will be job opportunities for locals who will be part of the team constructing the bridges and the others will form part of the team constructing the pathways leading to the bridges, which will be supervised by the SANDF. Material for pathways will be procured by the Cost Centre. Some of the construction materials and SANDF food supplies are being sourced locally.
