The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) would like to provide an update on construction work and inform motorists about road closures.
Several sections on the N3 from Pietermaritzburg towards Hilton have been barricaded with concrete barriers to allow for the construction of the far-left lane.
“The sections that have been barricaded are on the northbound carriageway, the first being under the Chatterton Road off-ramp, at the Midlands Mall. The second one is between Northern Park and Chase Valley Downs area and the last closure is located at the Athlone Mall just before the Peter Brown Bridge,” said Thabiso Dladla, Eastern Region Project Manager.
With the far-left lane closures being in place, motorists will be diverted to the middle and fast lanes on the northbound carriageway. However, after the Peter Brown Bridge, the full complement of 3 lanes are open.
“Construction on the southbound carriageway from Hilton towards Pietermaritzburg will commence on 07 April 2021, with the full closure of the far-left lane just before the Chatterton Road off-ramp to the arrestor bed at the Hilton interchange. This road closure will take place from 07 April 2021 to May 2022, regular updates will be provided throughout the lifespan of the project” added Dladla.
Motorists are advised to take note and comply with the advanced warning signage that has been installed just before the Armitage Road and Sanctuary Road off-ramp.
SANRAL apologises for the inconvenience caused to road users and will endeavour to complete the works as quickly as possible.
