Floods in Eastern Cape necessitated Gift of the Givers intervention in the region with already 1700 people having been displaced.
Sudan Evacuation is still in progress, Gift of the Givers is currently assisting three South Africans, one Kenyan and one Cameroonian.
The case of hostage Gerco van Deventer is now at the most crucial stage. Our negotiator, Mohamed Yehia Dicko, has departed for Mali having returned to SA last week for further consultation and to share sensitive and private information.
Today is a light-hearted moment when comedian Melt Sieberhagen visits us at Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel to hand over a cheque after he committed his winnings of R250k on KykNet to Gift of the Givers. Imtiaz Sooliman will meet him personally as a measure of our deep gratitude for his magnanimity. Staying with a lighter but important note we need the prayers of SA for Maritzburg United to beat Sundowns tomorrow evening to hopefully avoid relegation.
Thursday, 18 May, is a momentous event in our history, as we officially handover the R60 million stores upgrade at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital following the fire of April 2021. This is a state-of-the-art facility and will be the largest store of any hospital in SA. Multiple dignitaries will be at the event.
On 24 May we handover Paterson High School in Gqeberha, whose former pupils were the late Prof Jakes Gerwel and Dennis Brutus. Six classrooms were upgraded, a borehole was drilled and an Astroturf field was installed.
On 26 May, we handover an Astroturf field at the Desmond Mpilo Tutu School in Paarl.
On 27-28, May is the Gift of the Givers Disaster Conference in partnership with Stellenbosch University at the CTICC. This is probably the first of its kind in the world where it’s not a conference exclusively on gynaecology or surgery or plastics, orthopaedics, dietetics, emergency medicine or the like, but covers all these elements and more has a large search and rescue and K9 component, includes counselling, logistics and risks of disaster intervention, catering for all role players in a holistic approach to disaster management.
