As part of the City of Joburg’s Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit Phase 1C project, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is starting with constructing the BRT station in Sandton on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department.
Johannesburg’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is already responsible for transporting tens of thousands of passengers daily. With the extension of Rea Vaya into Sandton, the bus service will be able to add thousands more to its daily schedule.
The station will be between Sandton Drive and Katherine Street intersection south and Fifth Street on the north. The project involves the erection of the BRT Station building in the road median with two station modules like the one on Katherine Street.
The new stations will have dedicated BRT bus docking and bypass lanes in the road median on either side of the station and two outer mixed traffic lanes to maintain traffic around the station and pedestrian crossing to and from the Sandton Mall.
Due to the scale of this development, we would like to inform you of an upcoming traffic disruption initially on Rivonia Road due to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure project.
Starting Monday, 07 August 2023, the southbound lanes will be reduced to two lanes to accommodate the road widening. That part will be for approximately three months. At a later stage and dates, the middle lanes in both directions will be closed for seven months to facilitate the implementation of the BRT stations.
To minimise the impact caused to the public, road users and pedestrians, please be aware that traffic will occur in this area from the second week of August 2023, with an anticipated construction period of 10 months.
During the middle lane closure, there will be reduced capacity for vehicular traffic on the specified section of Rivonia Road and traffic congestion during peak hours. To minimize inconvenience, we recommend all motorists to consider the following alternate routes:
Alternate Route 1: Turn right into Katherine Street and loop back onto Rivonia Road with a left turn into West Street for northbound traffic.
Alternate Route 2: Turn off Rivonia Road via West or 5th Street onto Katherine Street. Then left back onto Rivonia at the Sandton Drive intersection for southbound traffic.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this construction may cause and appreciate your cooperation during this crucial phase of the BRT infrastructure project. Once completed, this project will significantly enhance the efficiency and sustainability of public transportation in our city,” JDA Acting Chief Executive Officer Siyabonga Genu.
