Just before 14:00, the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit received a call for a serious case where a side tipper truck drove over a construction worker’s leg in the Silverlakes area of Pretoria East. On arrival, the patient was in a critical condition, sustaining catastrophic injuries to their leg and pelvis.
Due to the severity of the injuries, the decision was made to airlift the patient to a specialist trauma hospital in Johannesburg for the best definitive care, while stabilising the patient along with Advanced Life Support Paramedics from multiple private ambulance services. As the Aeromedical helicopter arrived, the patient went into Cardiac Arrest and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Resuscitation was immediately initiated.
After almost an hour of resuscitation efforts, there was nothing further that could be done, and the patient was declared deceased.
The scene was handed over to SAPS for investigation.
We send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
Thank you to Netcare911, Emer-G-Med, Black Eagle EMS, Lakes Security Forum NPC and Bidvest security services for assisting with the scene.
