The Department convened a symposium for women in construction to address the stumbling blocks that are facing women in construction concerning their growth and representation in the industry.
The industry is dominated by males and women are under-represented and undermined by stereotypes, discriminatory cultures against women and patriarchal practices. This activity forms part of the departmental Women’s Month program.
The MEC emphasized that is important for the industry to be transformed and the playing field to be levelled through providing opportunities, support and training.
The executive authority encouraged those who are entering Joint Ventures (JV’s) that their interests mustn’t be only money but the transfer of skills, experience, and mentorship for them to be independent, competitive, competent, prominent and successful contractors.
The stakeholders (SANRAL, CIBD, Department of Treasury) made presentations to highlight challenges and progress made by women in the construction industry.
