The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Ms Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni today, 05 MAY 2022 tabled the Department of Transport R12 billion budget under the theme: “Transport driving recovery and economic growth”.
This theme places transport as a centre for the reconstruction and economic recovery of the province following the deadly pandemic of COVID-19, last year’s July unrest and the recent heavy floods that destroyed our roads and bridges, Driver’s Licence Testing Centres, work offices and work equipment.
We have had serious ongoing floods since 2008. As it stands over 1 369 projects will need to be repaired at an estimated value of R5, 6 billion. The repairing will be done in partnership with SANRAL as the implementing agency and Municipality. In addition over R8 billion of the budget will go into transport infrastructure which will see us upgrading 183 kilometres of surfaced road, building 50 kilometres of gravel road, and constructing 10 vehicle bridges and two pedestrian bridges.
