As part of connecting important economic corridors in the province and continuous infrastructure rollout, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, launched a second phase of an R444 million road upgrade in eNdwedwe.
The community of eNdwedwe today witnessed the opening of the first phase of main road P712 which is five kilometres and the launch of a new contractor to commence the work of constructing the second phase. The second phase is also five kilometres.
The road is being upgraded from gravel to blacktop.
Main road P712 provides a strategic link from eNdwedwe to P25/3 which is traversing from Tongaat to Mshwati and links the area of eNdwedwe with KwaMaphumulo through P711 which also links with KwaDukuza and Greytown.
The road is also an important feed of agricultural produce to the N2, King Shake International Airport and the Dube Trade Port.
The new phase will be built at the value of R123 million and will provide serious relief to emerging contractors and the designated groups (youth, women, people with disabilities and military veterans).
The construction will create much-needed jobs and skills development for the youth.
