As part of the government’s continued efforts of fast-tracking service delivery the Department of Transport will on Tuesday, 30 January 2024 commence with the construction of P233 and D1331 as part of the first EPC (Engineer, Procure and Construct) project awarded in KwaZulu-Natal.
Both roads which are located in the Amajuba District Municipality and local municipality of Newcastle will be upgraded at a cost of R244 million.
The total length of P233 is 11,3 kilometers and the total length of D1331 is 4,5 kilometers with both roads acting as link roads to P483.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Sipho Hlomuka will officiate the event and share details on how this project will contribute to local economic development and how local emerging contractors in the construction industry will benefit from these road upgrades.
In addition, MEC Hlomuka will this week also interact with Zibambele participants to announce interventions that will improve the implementation of this programme and empower contracted workers under this programme.
In this programme, MEC Hlomuka will be accompanied by the MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane who will roll out the departmental programme Isibhedlela Kubantu which will educate participants on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Zibambele Maintenance Programme is a road maintenance which aims to provide opportunities to mainly improvised women as a government effort to alleviate poverty. To date, the department employs over 41 0000 participants in the program.
MEC Hlomuka will end the week by conducting his constituency Back to School programme in the uThukela District that will see school pupils being assisted with school uniform items and identify bursary opportunities for top achieving scholars.
