The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has reached another milestone with the MyCiTi Phase 2A construction project this month, as the first red MyCiTi bus lanes were cast along AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain. The upgrade of AZ Berman Drive including the dedicated MyCiTi bus lanes is nearing completion, with the final traffic switch planned for next Friday, 26 June 2026.
‘I want to thank all residents and businesses in the vicinity for their patience with this long-term project. I can assure you that once we start seeing these red bus lanes being cast, the end is in sight. There is light at the end of this tunnel in the form of a safe, reliable, affordable and efficient bus service with dedicated lanes to reduce travel times; new stations; new stops and upgraded infrastructure. This project is a major part of our strategy to keep Cape Town moving. The project is on track and if all goes according to plan, most of the work is to be completed during the course of this year, with some minor works scheduled for February 2027,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The final traffic switch to accommodate upgrade works along AZ Berman Drive is planned for next Friday, 26 June 2026, between the BP and the Mitchells Plain Police Station. This means that traffic will move from the current northbound lane (towards Cape Town) to the newly completed southbound lane (towards Mitchells Plain). Vehicles will be able to travel in both directions using two lanes in each direction. The City will ensure that traffic cones and road markings separate the lanes and guide drivers through the work zone.
Residents and businesses in this vicinity can look forward to general road infrastructure upgrades as well, thereby revitalising the area. Upgrades will include upgrades to street signage; street lighting; landscaping; stormwater drainage; technology infrastructure; ducting; road-markings and traffic signals.
Additional upgrades along AZ Berman Drive include the following:
• Widening at the eastern bridge abutment, at the intersection of AZ Berman Drive and the R300, which has mostly been completed, with finishing works currently under way.
• Construction of the foundations for the future MyCiTi Sesame and Marguerite closed median stations are complete, with finishing works and testing currently in progress.
• Construction of the foundations for the left aligned open median stations in the vicinity of the Sesame and Marguerite Street intersections are complete, with the station in the vicinity of the Kerrem Street intersection being 70% complete
• The last phase of the upgrade project entails the construction of a separate Non-Motorised Transport Facility along the eastern side of AZ Berman Drive, with the planned completion date being February 2027, if all goes according to plan.
